York House Centre Open Day & Family Fun Day
Venue: York House Centre
Date: 29 Jul 2017
Time: 12:00 to - 20:00
Come and help us celebrate 50 years of youth clubs and community activities at York House Centre, and see the amazing new developments achieved over the last few years.
From 12 Noon to 8.00PM there will be delicious food and liquid refreshments (including a local ale bar and a barbecue), children’s activities, stalls and live music - culminating in a family barn dance. A special feature will be a rolling slide-show presenting 150 years of Stony history – its inns and pubs, its trams, its ship-building, its commerce and its characters.
York House caters for the whole community, hosting health, educational, social, hobby, arts, children’s, youth, and self-help groups. From yoga and pilates to clog dancing and abstract-impressionist art; from youth clubs and young persons’ drama groups to over-70s’ fitness groups and the University of the 3rd Age; from musical and spoken-word concerts to gardening and therapy in our Community Gardens; from all this to more.
The event is free, and open to all.

BACKGROUND: York House is a 160-year-old listed building, starting life as a banker’s home. In the early 20th century it became a private school for young ladies, closing in the 1950s. In 1963 it was bought by a local philanthropist to create a youth club, and has continued to host youth clubs until today. The “business” of York House has expanded over the last 20 years to include a wide range of community activities.
